The Making of a Fast Bowler

Commissioned for The Chappell Foundation Dinner, 2025

Created for The Chappell Foundation’s 2025 charity dinner, The Making of a Fast Bowler is a tribute to Dennis Lillee — one of Australian cricket’s most mythic figures.

The piece draws on the mythology of fast bowling — part science, part spirit — inspired by Lillee’s own writings in The Art of Fast Bowling and the cultural folklore that surrounds his era. Combining archival textures, type references from 1970s cricket ephemera, and a handcrafted composition, the artwork celebrates the making of both a bowler and an Australian icon.

Signed by Dennis Lillee himself, the artwork fetched over $4,000 at auction, with proceeds supporting The Chappell Foundation’s mission to combat youth homelessness.

To coincide with the event, Cricket Et Al produced an accompanying editorial feature and digital content, expanding on the creative process and the legacy behind the work.

The Making of a Fast Bowler reflects Fisher Classics’ approach to treating sport as culture — transforming a sporting story into a lasting cultural artefact that honours both craft and legacy.
